I spent a large part of Saturday afternoon cooking pasta sauce. I deseeded and skinned the tomatoes, roasted them, made onion jam, rendered bacon fat, roasted garlic…I fried, I stirred, I pureed, I simmered.

At the end of 3 hours, I had 7 servings of stewed tomato sauce to freeze. The taste was really quite out of this world.

While portioning the sauces between the freezing containers and looking back at the week past, I thought to myself:

How queer. Now that I am older, it would seem that what I want from the world is more complex tastes and more simple relationships.

After sharpening one of two boxes of brand new colour pencils the kiddies got in school for Children’s Day with a conventional sharpener.

Me: These pencils keep breaking! And I can’t believe this! I actually have a blister on my right hand from sharpening pencils!

He: [looks down at me while walking through the living room from the washing machine to the balcony laden with freshly washed laundry] Would you rather hang clothes or sharpen pencils?

Sometimes, dreadful tasks are only as dreadful as the angle you consider them from. If you straighten up from your cross-legged seat by the wastepaper bin and look at it all in context, it isn’t really so bad, you know?

That said, can’t wait till the kiddies learn to sharpen their own colour pencils.

While I was in Court this morning, the school called and told me that my daughter threw up in school during activities and asked me to arrange for someone to pick her up to go home and rest.

“Does she have a fever?” I asked.

“Not really. We isolated her in the office.”

“Oh well. Maybe she just ate too much. I’ll get someone to pick her up.” I replied.

Her teacher laughed.

I called The Other Half and he told me that the school had notified him of Peanut throwing up in school as well prior to speaking with me as I missed their first call while I was in Chambers.

He said, “Teacher asked whether she ate too much because she threw up a lot of food.”

*

I returned to the office after Court in the morning and received a call from my sister who was at my parents’ with the kiddies.

“I’m here with your kids. I think your daughter has a slight fever. Do you want me to give her some paracetamol?” she asked.

“How is she doing?” I asked.

“Erm…she’s upside down on her head on the sofa.”

I rolled my eyes.

I got The Buddha to take over my afternoon Court obligations and rushed home to check on the kiddies.

When I got home, my mother told me that when she asked Peanut why she threw up in school today, she blamed it on the bacon and eggs she had this morning.

*

After lunch, I took Peanut to the doctor’s for a check and also to get another course of antibiotics for my tonsillitis.

“What’s wrong with her?” the doctor asked.

“She threw up in school today. She claims that she has a sore throat as well but she is not the most reliable source of information.”

After a quick check, the doctor told me that there was nothing wrong with her.

“Maybe she ate too much,” he said.

*

Oh well. At least I got the afternoon off to nurse my throat. The downside is that I had to bring the cross-examination for my trial tomorrow home to do and it is going to be a long night since I spent the afternoon passed out after starting on my antibiotics.

Have I ever told you what a great guy The Other Half is? A couple of weeks back, we arranged to meet after work at Kino to procure a travel guidebook for our upcoming family holiday. We were to meet at 6:30pm, which meant that I needed to get off work latest at 6:00pm, which I didn’t manage to until 6:20pm [story of my life]. When I finally got there, he was calmly seated in Coffee Club with a drink and a book, with no outbursts or recriminations at my extreme latecoming.

When I was leaving work, I told my girls I married the most patient man on earth!: The man who would just quietly take a nap on the couch on his birthday morning while waiting for the kids and I to finish pottering about the dining room mixing up a cake and waiting an hour for it to be done, then later help with getting the kids ready and drive out to a hole-in-the-wall ramen place to satisfy ramen cravings, then asking me on the drive home how come I stopped playing Liszt’s La Campanella, which I stopped playing years ago because he developed La Campanella fatigue hearing me murder it on the piano every day.

Thank you for everything, my love. Hope you enjoyed the cake!
